Getting Around to Procrastination Day

National Procrastination Day – September 6, 2016

It’s almost here. The time to take charge. The time to say to yourself, “I’m finally going to do this.”

Yes, September 6 is National Fight Procrastination Day. As an added, cruel twist of fate, the day falls on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend when we are supposed to focus on what we do—not what we don’t do.

It’s the occasion when people get a temporary shot of inspiration and start spewing famous quotes our mothers told us like “never put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” Or the stinging question, “do you know what happens when you give a procrastinator a good idea? Nothing.”

So if procrastination is opportunity’s assassin, we better start dodging the bullets. It’s time to get around to recognizing this national day that I am certain was not created by slackers. I invite you – no, I challenge you – to list the top five things you have been avoiding and how you are going to tackle them. Five is manageable. If it were 10, you just may not get the ball rolling.

Five Organization Tasks I have been Avoiding

Here are mine:

  1. Organize my handbags in my closet
  2. Get fall purses ready
  3. Use a Purse Perfector to sort supplies in my sewing basket
  4. Organize my granddaughter’s Shopkins in a Purse Perfector
  5. Figure out what Shopkins are

Obviously, I have a theme and it has to do with continuing to organize my life with Purse Perfector. What are your action items for National Fight Procrastination Day?

Well, my procrastination gene kicked in full-force and I wasn’t able to post this blog about National Fight Procrastination Day until the day after! I’ll be better next year…

Macy’s Merchandise Expert Reveals Spring Handbag “Must-Haves”

It’s spring, time for reorganizing, cleaning and downsizing. That means an opportunity to part with those big, clunky winter bags that stored extra shoes, gloves and scarves, and transition to the latest trends for the season.

According to Devon Bitzer, executive My Stylist @ Macy’s, there are three “must haves” for spring 2016:

  1. The Mini Bag. They come in an array of dazzling colors and light weight designer brands perfect for work as well as casual outings.
  2. The Drawstring Bag. It has made a come-back! These bags are available in various sizes and shapes. The photo below shows a Fossil Jules Fringe Drawstring Bag.
  3. The Novelty Bag. Don’t be surprised to see the newest going-out bags in the shape of food or emblazoned with emoji’s on the outside. They are fun and whimsical.

Devon, whose career path started as a buyer and veered toward perfecting the personal shopping experience, recently toured the Macy’s handbag section with Purse Perfector Founder Lyn Marsteller. They started with a yellow Michael Kors XS Crossbody mini bag called the Ava Bag shown below. Lyn demonstrated how to easily divide a medium Purse Perfector in half for a small bag and voila! It fit inside like a glove. That’s when Devon got a revelation. “The Purse Perfector actually helps you decide what you really need to carry in your bag. My new motto is, ‘if it doesn’t have a place to go in the Purse Perfector, you probably don’t need it.’”

What about the drawstring bag? Can the Purse Perfector fit as snuggly with that purse’s structure? “I was impressed with the material that the Purse Perfector is made of,” says Devon. “It molds to the shape of the drawstring bags beautifully.”

“It’s nice to know that you can unzip a Purse Perfector and place it in any purse,” concluded Devon. “I just love the convenience it brings to me and to my clients.”

Be As Royal As Kate Middleton; You DO Have A Snowballs’ Chance!

Be As Royal As Kate Middleton; You DO Have A Snowballs' Chance!

You have the poise, the fashions and now the chance to have a regal, limited edition royal purple or a berry Purse Perfector.  This rich-looking purple is fit for, well, a princess. Have you ever wondered why all the fuss about purple being the color of royalty?

A lot of it has to do with Queen Elizabeth I.  Purple dye was rare and expensive those days. Wearing purple was a clever way to distinguish the monarchy from the Elizabethan subjects. The queen forbad everyone except close members of the royal family to have or wear purple attire and accessories.

Flash forward. We are free to indulge in as much purple as we want! You don’t have to wear a hat, drink high tea or be a resident of Buckingham Palace to enjoy your purple. Purse Perfector has you covered.  Could a purple Perfector be in the cards for the ever-organized Kate Middleton?  Or Queen Elizabeth?

Feel royal now by getting your limited edition Purse Perfector. But hurry before supplies run out. Here’s a quick link for ordering.

Changing Seasons and Purse Organization

It’s the time of the year when we clear our closets, swapping summer clothes, sandals and straw and light handbags for sweaters, layers, boots, and leather and suede purses. We wanted to share some tips from our colleagues at the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) in order to simplify the closet change and how to have your Purse Perfector purse organizer ready to move from a slouchy hobo to a divided handbag to a snazzy leather clutch.

Clothes

When hanging your winter clothes in your closet, turn the hook of the hanger backwards on the rod. After you wear that item, turn the hanger hook around. At the end of the season, you will be easily able to see what clothes you haven’t worn and should consign, donate or give to a friend.

Shoes and boots

If your suede boots or shoes have water spots or stains, get a suede brush (looks like a kitchen sponge with a soft and a scrubbing side) or sponge to softly rub the stains away. You can find these essential tools at your local shoe repair shop or the accessories area of a department or shoe store. After you have cleaned them or before you wear any new shoes, spray a little suede protector over the shoes to help resist spots.

Purse Organization

Start by taking your Purse Perfector insert out of your summer bag and literally clean the inside and outside of those bags. Determine if your collection of summer bags, totes and purses are worthy of another season with you. Pad the inside of each bag with crumpled tissue paper or clear plastic dry cleaner bags, using more tissue or bags between the bags and place in a storage box which can fit in your closet, cupboard or under your bed.

Now would be a good time to empty your Purse Perfector, clean out the tissue crumbs, errant mints, etc. and either spot clean or place in a laundry bag and toss in your washing machine on gentle. Air dry. Reload.

Since my winter handbags tend to be heavier than my summer purses, I take out my folding fan and a small tube of sunscreen and any other warm weather items. I also switch lipstick and gloss colors, but much of the rest stays the same.

Now that I have my Purse Perfector perfectly organized and my winter purses are ready to be used, I want to be sure to see all my bags so I can easily slip my Purse Perfector into any bag within seconds and be ready to go. Using 3M plastic hooks, I hang several of my purses on unused wall space in our closet. When I want to use one of those purses, I have a hook to bring them down and I’m ready to go.

Changing Seasons and Purse Organization

If I want to use a smaller handbag or a clutch, I simply unzip the two sections of my Purse Perfector™, rearrange a few items, use a small wallet and just use the short section to keep everything at my fingertips and in predictable order.

How to Keep Organized with a Purse Organizer

Large Black with Silver Purse Organizer

Whether your travels this summer include on a road trip, a nice long stay in the mountains, on the beach or long distance flights in exotic locales, a purse organizer can be a woman’s best everyday tool.

Did you know that the average woman carries a purse that weighs between 4 and 14 pounds?

So, unless carrying a heavy purse is part of your workout regime, here are some of our best tips on how keep organized with a Purse Perfector purse organizer.

1) It’s okay to leave things behind.

A purse organizer can’t be too big or we’re tempted to take everything and it can’t be too small or something is left behind. With a Purse Perfector, you can decide which size to get based on whether you carry a long checkbook wallet (the Large was designed to hold that style wallet between the two sections) or a smaller wallet, which fits in the tall section of the Medium size.

2) Organize for Travel

Before traveling, empty your purse organizer and include only what you need: no local loyalty cards or discount coupons, dark lipsticks, work ID, parking pass or extra keys.

3) ONLY use your Purse Perfector Organizer

If you have a purse with organization pockets, ignore those pockets and put all your essentials in the purse organizer so nothing is left behind when you change bags.

4) Be sure to “zone” your items

Your wallet or your phone goes in the same pocket each time, all lip products or cosmetics in the same place, sunglasses and reading glasses each have a pocket, etc. With zoned purse organization, you have predictable order every time, in every bag.

5) Organize for Airline Security

Removing liquids for clearing airline security is easy when you always know where to look for your hand sanitizer, hand cream and other liquids.

6) Utilize the Different Sections

Don’t lose your purse organization just because you need a smaller purse – unzip your Purse Perfector entirely and use just the front section with your cosmetics, medications and a small wallet and slip into a small clutch or the front pocket of your travel tote.

7) Use soap and water for cleanup

A purse organizer should be able to handle small spills and either be spot cleaned with soap and water or use a stain remover pen. It’s better to have that lipstick smear or pen stain in your purse organizer that in your expensive handbag.

8) Keep your IDs and documents organized

Use one of the front flat pockets or the back pocket for your picture ID when going through airline security, replacing in your wallet after clearing security.

9) Use the back pocket for your hotel key card

With your phone in the shorter section, your phone won’t demagnetize your hotel key card and you can slip your key card out effortlessly to get into your room.

10 ) Use the Purse Perfector Purse Organizer in other areas

Because of the flat base of the Purse Perfector, many women report placing their Purse Perfector in the console area for easy access and pop it back into their purse at their destination.

Happy travels!

What’s In Your Bag? A Guide to Purse Organization

Before and After a Purse Perfector Organizer

Let’s face it, ladies – it’s difficult to distinguish what is a “necessity” and a “want to have on hand” when it comes to purse organization.

“What should stay in and what should stay out of your purse? THAT is the question”

No, it’s not a line from Shakespeare, but it is a question that needs answered! So, let’s get to answering it!

What Goes In Your Purse

Obviously, the most important to have in your bag is lipstick – just kidding. The most important item in your purse is your wallet and/or change purse and all the contents that go in it; cash, credit and identification cards, and store loyalty cards.

Recommendation:

We recommend having a small to medium wallet (keep small loyalty cards on a key chain or use the free app KeyRing to scan the codes to your cell phone) that is easily transferable, doesn’t take up much space, and still has plenty of room for everything you need to keep in it.

Small. organized wallet

The second most used item in your handbag is usually your cosmetics, which many women choose to carry in cosmetic pouch for touch-ups on the go.

Recommendation:

Once again, we recommend getting a cosmetic pouch that is small, but carries your most important items. And speaking of “most important,” we recommend only packing what you will absolutely need when touching up.

Keep it simple and stick with your most-used items: a travel-sized perfume, a mirror or compact, ONE lipstick or gloss (a double-sider works great), perhaps blush and an eye and/or lip pencil.

You’ll also want to find a place for your cell phone, sunglasses, and/or reading or prescription lenses. It’s also a good idea to carry items such as medications, tissues, antibacterial lotion or wipes and bandages, just in case.

Recommendation:

Keep your miscellaneous supplies to a minimum: One pair of sunglasses with a small case, a small pad of paper and a pen, and a travel-sized medical kit.

What Should Stay Out of Your Purse

  • Full-size cosmetic bottles or tubes
  • Empty food packages and wrappers
  • The binky your 5-year old used years ago
  • Large hair brushes

How To Keep Your Purse Organized

Does your purse look like any of these?

Unorganized PurseCluttered PurseBefore a Purse Perfector

As purses have gotten larger, the need for internal organization is essential, especially when you’re a busy woman on-the-go. You’ve got a million things to do, a limited amount of time, and a purse that must assist you with the items necessary to carry out your day.

Recommendation:

If you’ve gotten nothing out of this blog, take this piece of advice with you: If you don’t have a purse with several organizational pockets and your purse is a mess, purchase a Purse Perfector purse organizer! You can easily organize all of your items in it and then transfer it from handbag to handbag! How easy is that!?

A Caricature is Worth 1,000 Threads

Lyn Marsteller's Mother

This image of my mother was created at a party in the late 1950s. The hosts supplied various media and scrap paper (this piece of paper has notes from a garden club meeting on the other side). Painted in watercolors and crayon, my mother placed it in the discard pile when downsizing to move to a condo.

I “saved” this image, framed it and hung it over my sewing desk, where she has kept an amused and stylish eye on my miles and miles of stitches in both clothing and in creating the prototypes of the Purse Perfector. It was my mother and her mother who taught me to sew at age 5 and sewing has remained an art, a passion, and a fascination for me for decades.

In fact, it is because of my mother’s instruction and encouragement of my sewing that led to the creation of the Purse Perfector. Sewing had allowed me to create new clothes on my modest salary as a nonprofit development professional for decades, striving to apply the couture techniques I admired in designer clothing but could not afford.

When I made the first dozen prototypes of the Purse Perfector as a solution to the un-managed mess in every handbag I used while traveling in Europe in September 2001, my mother was eager to see my hand-tailored solution to purse organization, whether for use as a travel purse organizer or as a daily purse organizer in women’s handbags nationwide.

As one of my biggest cheerleaders for the success of Purse Perfector, she was thrilled when I received the utility patent for my invention (her father was an attorney, as is my husband). Unfortunately, my quest for an American manufacturer to produce my handbag organizer was not successful until two years after her death.

In 2009, my friend and sewing teacher Sandra Betzina, introduced me to a San Francisco-based manufacturer and within months, hundreds of friends, relatives and strangers were using this American-made purse organizer on a daily basis.

I’d have to say that a thread – a theme – runs through my life. My grandmother taught my mother to sew and they both taught me to sew, encouraging me to learn more. In turn, I met Sandra and continued to my interest in molding cloth and stitches into garments and ultimately, to construct the Purse Perfector.

My mother’s smiling image near my sewing machine always reminds me that it all starts with one stitch. And I’m grateful to have had those hands help guide my stitches.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Cheers,

Lyn
